What is this CrossFit stuff, anyway? You’ve heard the name CrossFit. But, what is it? Today we have a guest blog post from Lance Breeden, owner of Ultimate CrossFit:
What is CrossFit? The definition taken from an article actually titled “What is CrossFit” states that “CrossFit is a strength and conditioning system built on constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity.” If you break it down into the each component, you have the following pieces – strength and conditioning system, constantly varied, functional movements and high intensity. Let’s start by just looking at each of those. Strength and conditioning system – This is pretty basic right? A program that looks to make you stronger and improve your conditioning. That is how I define a person who is fit, someone strong who has great conditioning. Next we have constantly varied – In order to keep improving we need to vary the type and style of work we do. Long workouts, short workouts, heavy, light, different movements and different movement patterns. Let’s keep it fresh and keep the body guessing. Functional Movements – Things that are multiple joint movements that we also may see in everyday life. Picking something off the ground, putting something over our head and squatting are great examples of these. This is where the real magic is, using big movements that give us the best result. Finally, high intensity – This is person-dependent. For some, getting off the couch and getting another beer may be intense. For you, it might take 10 rounds of 400m sprints with 100 burpees in between. Intensity is necessary for us to get the most out of what we are doing. There is really no easy way. You have to work hard to get what you are looking for.
Now that we have looked at the basic definition, let’s look at the other things we find at a CrossFit gym. Community – You have a lot of like-minded people who workout, sweat and bleed together multiple times a week. This gives you a connection that you just don’t get at other places. Trainers – You get certified trainers working with you everyday. If you have a question about something, you have someone there to help. If you are working as hard as you can, maybe your technique drops a bit and you have someone who corrects your technique. And, finally, its fun. It is just a blast to workout in a way that isn’t boring and gives you such great results. That, in a nutshell, is what CrossFit is to me.
